Another eventful evening

Posted in Pre Trip on October 1, 2008 by Nathanael Rowe

This may be on the border of unbelievable, especially if you read last night’s blog, but nevertheless I will tell you today’s story.

I got to Parkcrest Lakewood for the High School groups tonight about an hour too early.  So I thought I would go for a little ride, maybe pick up some food.  On my way back to the church, on Artesia Blvd, the two cars right in front of me stop in the middle of the road.

The older guy from the car on the right got out and started swinging through the passenger window of the car on the left trying to hit the driver.  The driver got out and started fighting back.  By this time I had pulled over to watch the free fight.  There were women in both vehicles, and they were the only ones trying to stop the fight, so when I realized that I decided, what the heck, I have my gloves and helmet on, and they don’t appear to have any weapons, so I stepped in.  I yelled for another guy to grab the older guy, while i put the guy closest to me in a hold until the police showed up, which was only about 20 seconds later.

I hung around just in case I was needed, and then once the cop said I could go, I headed back to the church.  It has been a fun last 24 hours, and I can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow.

Operation Stakeout was a Success!

Posted in Pre Trip on October 1, 2008 by Nathanael Rowe

So if you read my last blog you would know the student center got broken into last night.  They stole a few things, including one of my students guitars, however the guitar was found in the bushes behind the modular.  Apparently they couldn’t take the guitar with them, probably cause they were on foot, so they ditched it in the bushes.  My buddy Joe came by right after I filed the police report, and we talked about staking out the church at night, seeing if anyone came back for the guitar.

So of course, we did just that.  We met up around 9pm and hung out in a spot where we could see the guitar through a window.  At about 9:25, we saw an SUV pull up to the front of the church, and saw a kid get out and run behind the modular.  Without any time to think, Joe said, “Lets go Koz!”, and we were running out the door without any clue what we were doing.  Joe went after the vehicle, and I so I thought, well I guess I’m going after the kid.

I ran around the west side of the building expecting to see him trying to pull a guitar out of a bush that we had ziptied down earlier, however he was at a completely different location grabbing something out of another bush, closer to the south west corner of the property there at Lakewood.  He was grabbing a box that looked just like the container I use to keep the video game stuff in.  I was confused, because when the police came earlier that day to check and see what had already been stolen, that box was still in my office.  I know that because the police officer even said, “oh they didn’t take the video game stuff.”

So now I’m running after a kid carrying what looks to be the churches video game box.  I yell, “Hey what are you doing?”

He stops in the middle of Woodruff and says “Just carrying some stuff.”

“What stuff” I say.

“I don’t know, my friend paid me to come pick this up” He says.

“Hey you should probably come back over here, you are about to get hit by a car,” I tell him.

He comes back over toward the curb, and now he is only like 5 feet from me.  I still don’t know if this is my stuff or not, cause earlier that same day it was in my office.  I tell him to set the box down, and that he should take a seat on the curb.

He says, “Why”

And I say, which I now regret, “Just have a seat the police are on there way.”  Looking back, I should have said something to entice him in staying longer, and informing a cowardly burglar that the police are coming rarely encourages that person to sit around.

So at that he said, “F#$% that,” bolted across the street and hopped back into the SUV which was now waiting for him across Woodruff.

I yelled out to Joe to come over, told him what had happened, and we called the police.  Gave them the license plate number that Joe had seen, and the description of my new found friend.  What was interesting is that they came back at some point today, between  3pm and 6pm stole more stuff, hid it in some bushes, and then came back a third time tonight to pick it all up.  I think there is a reason that most crooks do not have PHDs.  Anyway the guitar was put back somewhere safe, all is well, and what started out as a pretty crappy morning, turned into one of the best nights ever!

A Crappy Morning

Posted in Pre Trip on September 30, 2008 by Nathanael Rowe

Today I came into the student center here at Lakewood to find the whole room had been ransacked. Both my office and the storage room had been pretty much tossed around in search of anything worth stealing.

Among the items stolen were my church laptop, a projector, and about $100 in petty cash. This is not the first time that room has been broken into, it is at least the 3rd or 4th time this has happened since I have worked here.

Anyway, I just ask for prayer. I mainly would just like for this to stop, and so I ask for prayer that people will be convicted, at least to the point that they do not do this again.

New Headsets!

Posted in Pre Trip on September 27, 2008 by Nathanael Rowe

So Ryan and I bought new headsets for our helmets called the scalarider Q2.

It gives us the ability to do a few things.

  1. We can talk to each other via intercoms.
  2. We can talk on the phone through a bluetooth receiver in the headset
  3. We can listen to FM radio, which means with an FM transmitter we can listen to our ipods as well.

We went out riding this morning just to test them out.  They work pretty good, and it makes riding with Ryan a lot easier, cause I just tell him when he is ditching me, instead of trying to catch up with him just to give him a hand signal that he doesn’t understand.
